How long do solo ads take to work? Short version: the opt ins show up immediately and the money shows up later. If you are refreshing a sales dashboard on click day, you are watching the wrong screen at the wrong time.
Clicks start arriving within 24 hours of your order. That part is fast. What happens after is a function of your follow up, and follow up takes time by design.
The single most common way a new buyer talks himself out of a working campaign is judging it on day one.
On day one you get clicks and opt ins. That is it. A person who opted in an hour ago has read one email from you at most. They have no idea who you are yet. Expecting them to buy in that window is like proposing on a first date and calling the whole dating thing a scam when it goes badly.
Sales come out of the follow up, from emails you wrote before the traffic ever ran.
This is the only same day number that means anything, and it is the one that tells you the most.
Your opt in rate is a verdict on two things: the match between the ad and your page, and the page itself. Nothing else. It does not tell you whether your offer converts, and it does not tell you whether you made money.
Count opt ins on day one, write the number down, and then stop looking at anything for a while. What a good opt in rate actually looks like gives you something to compare it against.
Here is the part nobody selling you a dream will say plainly: your income comes from emails, not from clicks.
A subscriber gets to know you across a stack of messages. Some of them buy on the first offer. Some buy after they have read fifteen emails and decided you are not going anywhere. That takes as long as it takes, and it cannot be compressed by staring at it.
This is why I say mail twice a day for the first 30 days. Not to be annoying, but because the relationship is the product and you only get one chance to build it while you are still fresh in their memory. The full approach is in the solo ad follow up sequence.
Seth Johnson has been running solo ad traffic since 2007. He tested me with 100 clicks, then 200, then ordered 500 at 100% Tier 1 and sent them to an aggressive squeeze page.
That 500 click order produced $965 in commissions, tracked in his own tracking, over roughly a month.
Over roughly a month. Not on Tuesday afternoon.
If Seth had checked his numbers 48 hours in and quit, he would have quit on a campaign that was working. The full story is in how Seth turned 500 clicks into $965.
Seth's results are his own. Your results depend on your offer, your page, and your follow up.
Slows it down: no emails loaded when the traffic runs, a squeeze page that asks for four fields, sending traffic straight to an offer so you own nothing afterwards, mailing once a week, and quitting before the sequence has finished running.
Speeds it up: first email delivering the promise instantly, mailing twice a day, an offer you already know converts from other traffic, and ordering enough clicks that the numbers are readable in the first place.
Nothing on the speed up list involves the traffic. That is not modesty, it is just where the levers are.
Judge in two stages.
Stage one, day one: did people opt in? If the opt in rate is poor, the fix is the page or the match between the ad and the page. That is fixable before you spend again.
Stage two, 30 days: did the list produce anything? Opens, replies, clicks on your links, sales. By then your sequence has run and you know whether the offer and the follow up hold up.
Anything in between is noise, and reacting to noise is how people burn money changing three things at once.
One more thing. Judge on 500 clicks, not 100. A small order gives you a handful of leads and a result you cannot trust in either direction. How many clicks you need covers why.
Clicks: within 24 hours. Opt ins: same day. Money: out of your follow up, over the weeks that follow, if the follow up exists.
Build the sequence, run 500 clicks, mail twice a day, and look at the whole thing after 30 days with a straight face.
Order 500 clicks and give the campaign the month it needs.

Cheap quality traffic is possible, but a low click rate alone tells you nothing about the people behind it. Judge the leads, not the bargain.

Your new solo ad leads are at their warmest the minute they opt in, and they cool off fast. Here is what to send them in the first 30 days, why I say mail twice a day, and why early unsubscribes are a good sign.
